  Forming a Committee

After you complete worksheet 1 (you should do this now if you haven’t already), you may have identified important industries or areas that you wish to further develop.  Each of those areas contains important stakeholders who should be involved in your planning.  Typically, an organization that already works to some degree with tourism begins the initial effort.  This could be a local Chamber of Commerce, convention and visitor’s bureau, or economic group.  However, leadership can also come from local businesses, individuals, or elected officials.

Once the initial leadership group has been selected, the next step is to establish a formal committee of key persons who will be involved in all aspects of tourism development in your committee.  These individuals may already favor tourism development, and will be easily recruited to your committee’s efforts, though it is crucial to also seek members who do not favor tourism development.  Having your community represented holistically by the committee should be your ultimate goal.

The following table shows a variety of traditional and non-traditional community members and organizations that can be invited to participate in the tourism planning committee.
