The Tourism Connection:
Sustaining People, Places and Communities
Tourism relies on the development and use of natural, historical, cultural and human resources in the local environment as tourist attractions and destinations, and creates recreational uses for these amenity resources, converting them into income producing assets. Based on the attractiveness of a community’s amenity resources, opportunities exist for a variety of tourism-related businesses that can assist in diversifying the local economy. One critical challenge associated with such efforts is to not degrade environmental resources nor negatively exploit local human and cultural resources, in order that these resources may be maintained for present and future generations.
Thus, the concept of “sustainability” has become associated with tourism development initiatives and efforts. Sustainable tourism development, as a concept, has been called “one of the healthiest insights of tourism,” development that is environmentally sound, economically viable, and socially responsible and acceptable.
This is related to the theme of the 2009 National Extension Tourism Conference, “The Tourism Connection: Sustaining People, Places and Communities.” The conference is sponsored by the NET Design Team, whose mission is to enhance Extension tourism programs nationally by providing relevant information, useful resources, and networking opportunities for Extension professionals and others working in the broad area of tourism and recreation. This NET Conference provides a great opportunity for Extension educators, other professionals, and students working and studying in the broad area of tourism and recreation to meet over the course of three days to share programs and projects, network and engage in discussions, and take home many new ideas.
