Hearne Historic Preservation and Heritage Tourism Planning
Fall 2004-December 2006. Working with graduate students and City of Hearne to document historic preservation inventory, tourism inventory, conduct festival surveys, and spatial database (maps) to facilitate heritage management and heritage tourism development. January 2007 - May 2008: “Documenting Community Histories in Hearne, Texas.” Preserve America Grant for the City of Hearne. Principal TAMU co-investigators T. Jamal and U. Gretzel with D. Jourdan and A Thoms as project consultants. Interviews with older residents to gather community histories, plus heritage project with schoolchildren and the development of an interactive web site showing historic properties and community heritage narratives for Hearne.
Mountain Resorts Tourism and Development Study
2006-2007: “Sustainable Mountain Community Development: Managing Growth and Change in Western Canadian Resort Communities”. Principle co-investigator with Sanjay Nepal and Ray Chipeniuk (portion of research). Conducting interviews and document analysis of tourism development and resort-related impacts in mountain communities in British Columbia and Alberta, Canada. Developing a resource base and case studies as well. Study funded by the Canadian Embassy (Wa, D.C.) and the B.C. Real Estate Board.
Cultural heritage conservation and tourism impacts in Mexico
2007-8 Research on tourism impacts in Cozumel and the Riviera Maya. Specific focus is cultural heritage and sustainable tourism development. This is an interdisciplinary study with colleagues at TAMU and U. of Quintana Roo in Cozumel.
