Selected Projects - Dr. Jim Gramann
Alaska Region Social Science Research Plan
Conducted a series of needs assessment workshops and interviews to identify and prioritize social science research needed to manage national parks in Alaska. The project produced an ambitious ten-year plan to meet priority social science needs of the region by the centennial year of the National Park Service in 2016. It proposes a specific agenda of research projects and programs for the Alaska Region and an organizational strategy and budget to conduct the research.
National Park Service Health and Recreation Initiative
This nationwide effort of the National Park Service investigates the link between national parks and the physical well-being of visitors and residents of neighboring communities. Seven pilot parks are developing programmatic interventions designed to encourage various types of healthful physical activity in parks, including walking, biking, and kayaking. Quasi-experimental designs are being employed to evaluate the effectiveness of the interventions in influencing the behavior of target populations.
