Garbage pollution and management in Nepal's Sagarmatha (Mt.
Everest) National Park
|
|
Citation:
|
Edited
by Burns, P. and Novelli, M., Clevedon: Channel View
|
|
Summary:
|
Mass
media has played critical roles in fuelling public discussions and shaping
attitudes and perceptions about tourism and the environment. International
media has portrayed garbage pollution in Nepal's Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest)
National Park as too serious an issue to ignore, and probably a reason to
avoid visiting the Park. This paper highlights the success of a locally
managed garbage clean-up project in the Park. It examines the spatial
variation in garbage accumulation, local efforts to clean-up garbage, and
suggests several short and long-term strategies to overcome the challenges.

Tourism in mountainous environment: The Mount Everest region
of Nepal
|
|
Citation:
|
Edited
by Wall G., University of Waterloo Publication Series
|
|
Summary:
|
Tourism in
mountainous environments poses specific challenges not encountered
elsewhere. Mountain-specific characteristics such as inaccessibility,
fragility, diversity, niche, and marginality have significant implications
for the type, intensity, and nature of tourism development in the
mountains. This paper examines the type, magnitude, and extent of
environmental impacts in the Everest region. The environmental costs need
to be accounted for when considering the net benefits from tourism.

Edited
by Price, M. F.and Butt, N., A State-of-the-Knowledge Report for 2000.
Oxon: CAB International, pp. 353-359.
|

|
Knowledge
is limited with regard to the extent, conditions, and use of mountain forests
in Asia. While data are available on the status of tourism in protected
mountainous areas, information on forest recreation in the mountains is
significantly lacking. This paper provides an overview of the status of
knowledge regarding recreation and tourism use of mountain forests, and
discusses several strategies to manage sustainable tourism in Asian
mountain forests.

|
|

|
Edited
by Butler, R. W. and Boyds, S. W., London: John Wiley, 2000, pp. 73-94.
|
|
Summary:
|
This
chapter examines the relationship between parks and protected areas, tourism
and local communities in the Nepalese Himalayas. Three popular mountain
destinations, which have experienced different intensity of tourism
development, have been considered to explore how tourism may, or may not,
be a significant factor in improving a local people-park relationship.
Moreover, it also examines how different institutional set-ups and policies
affect the relationship.
